This blog is more of a diary of my research which expands as I go. Know that a post from last year may have more updated research in a different post. I love the discovery process which has resulted in such wonderful success in finding my roots. If you comment and are looking for a response, please leave me an email address. zelserskhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11392051499155306765noreply@blogger.comBlogger558125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1283298824425438148.post-5196324463312453152021-01-15T20:37:00.003-08:002021-01-15T20:38:59.025-08:00Rohman Rohmann Family Tree Lead
<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: #274e13; color: white; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I was recently able to make contact with someone on my Rohman side of the family via a DNA match on Ancestry. The last name of the person gave it away. We did determine how we are connected. He said he really didn't know much and isn't really into his family tree at this point. He said that could change. He did ask a relative on his Rohman side where they were from in Germany. They originate in Bavaria.

<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: #274e13; color: white; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Bavaria is something to go on but not as much as I'd hoped. Bavaria is a province/state within present-day Germany. It was part of Prussia by 1871 but retained its kingdom title. It was mostly Catholic unlike the northern part of present-day Germany which was Lutheran. That makes sense since the Rohman's appear to be Catholic. On my mom's side, my German ancestors are from the northwestern part of Germany between Hannover and the border of the Netherlands. They were all Lutheran (Evangelicals).

<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">In finding out this information, I asked if there was more. I shared the following in hopes that maybe there will be more. I am posting here too since who knows if someone will read this someday and be interested in connecting to dots. <span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: #274e13; color: white; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">My great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Rohman, b. 20 Nov. 1878, New York City. Her actual birth record says she was born at 240 Delancy Street. Her husband was Francis Joseph McGuire. They married but he eventually took off on the family. Mary raised her 4 children pretty much on her own. Her children were Francis Robert McGuire (b. 1908 - My grandfather), John McGuire, Cecilia McGuire, and Marion McGuire. Each got married but the girls never had children. My grandfather was a commercial artist for Paramount Pictures in New York City and he and his family lived on Long Island in Franklin Square. John McGuire moved his family to New Jersey. They lived in East Keansburg/Middletown down near the shore. I have spent time in Franklin Square and visited New Jersey. I never met my great grandmother. She passed well before I was born. In her later years, she seemed to make the rounds to live with each of her children. My dad knew her and said she lived with them off and on. I have a photo of her on Ancestry associated with her profile. She apparently had Parkinson's disease and shook like a leaf in her later years. She died of colon/stomach cancer. The information that I have about her is sparse and kind of sad.

<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: #274e13; color: white; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">My grandmother (Josephine) was not a huge fan of her mother-in-law, Mary E. Rohman McGuire. Mary's husband (Francis Joseph McGuire) took off on the family and was an alcoholic. My uncle says that there were so many secrets kept on that side of the family that no one knows really the story. I am interested in finding out more information even if it casts an ugly shadow on things. Mary's parents were Joseph Rohman and Frances L. (the L. is a mystery and I've seen the full name transcribed at least 5 different ways - Lakervine, Luchwurm, and a few others). Her siblings were Joseph, Rosina/Rose, and John Francis. There could be more siblings but back then sometimes babies/kids didn't make it. I've found conflicting information about my Rohman side.

<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: #274e13; color: white; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">My Irish side of the family never admitted that the Rohman's were of German descent. I will stop right there on that subject of ethnic difference for now. My granddad did say that there is apparently a "Dutchman from Louisiana" in there somewhere on that side of the family. Was that just a rumor or exaggeration that he was told? I'm sure there is a story there and may not show people in the greatest light but I am interested. What we have discovered over the years is that colon cancer runs in that line. From a health perspective that is somewhat helpful for the younger generation to know for preventive measures.

<span face=""Source Sans Pro", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: #274e13; color: white; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I'm not sure if I will hear back or if there is any additional information to glean. Who knows.
zelserskhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11392051499155306765noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1283298824425438148.post-63076404492918507262020-12-21T19:08:00.011-08:002020-12-29T18:59:36.476-08:00Honhorst - Borchers
Back to some genealogy.....Again, not the most exciting post for some and not terribly exciting sometimes to read about
another's family tree. I've tried to find some anecdotal story or information
to share but instead, I share the rather typical story of farmers from Germany
who were my ancestors. My mom's heritage is 1/2 Lutheran/Evangelical Germans
who left what was Prussia at the time (the mid-1800s) and 1/2 Irish Catholics
who left Ireland in the 1800s (and not all at the same time).

Google maps, I can easily find information about it and my Vienop line. For my
Borchers line, I can clearly find Honhorst, Germany but not a lot of
information about it. It's clearly farmland. It's about 30 miles due west of Hannover
in the Northwestern part of Germany. I can find info about the town just south
of there known as Bad Nenndorf. My aunt and uncle did extensive research on
this line and got the family tree back to Jurgen Borchers (my 8th great
grandfather), 1657-1720.

I pursued more of my Vienop line which originates in Börninghausen, North Rhine-Westphalia in Minden-Lübbecke district which is part of the city of Preussisch Oldendorf. Let's just say Google translate has been a great help. The last time any of my family members actually visited Family members in this location, from California, was my GG grandfather, Henry Vienop and his daughter, my Great Aunt Minnie, in 1925.

My Aunt Marie's and Uncle Herb's previous research takes me back to about 1700 with sourced proven info. I have since gotten back into the 1600s and one person back into the 1500s with some sourcing on Ancestry. It helps that they all lived in the same place and communities right by Börninghausen and most of the surnames are rather unique German names, except maybe Koch.

The 1925 family occupation there was cigarmaking and farming. I recently received a message over Ancestry.com about my McLaughlin line. I haven't worked on that line in years. I gave up a long time ago on finding the exact location and connection back to Ireland. Sure, the family history handed down over the years indicates that they were from County Longford. Yes, proving this with source documentation has been skimpy at best. I had spent some time on Ancestry.com updating this family tree at one time. I also have looked over DNA matches. Relating to this line, I always find the people I expect to find. I can usually identify that they come from this line too at least to 4th cousin matches on exceedingly long list of DNA matches. It is actually dizzying how may DNA matches one does have on Ancestry.com. Anyway, I think I will clean up my Irish Settlement index a bit and fix links so people can actually find what I posted. My goal has always been to post it online rather than stash it way in a drawer, a box, or even on some hard drive where it might all get lost in time!zelserskhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11392051499155306765noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1283298824425438148.post-59034256138967875782019-03-19T15:26:00.000-07:002019-03-19T15:26:11.394-07:00History of the Roman Catholic Churches of the Kuyahoora Valley

That is my maiden name, by the way. McGuire's are known for their rowdiness according this priest at a church in Brooklyn. I spoke with him years ago now (around 2010-2011) when I called to ask about a church registry. Heck, he said they were always (that was his word choice..oh yes), "giving me grief". What a joker who never did call me back. Why would he? He's busy. After two churches closed and merged into that one, they have a lot of people to take care of while being the keeper of those old church registry's (that I'd love to look at).

McGuire though, seriously, it is a pretty common Irish name and comes with the reputation, I suppose. Some people think its Scottish. You can probably find the name in Scotland, inasmuch as you find it in America and other places where the Irish fled. They did flee, by the way, but not just for famine. They fled to escape religious and political persecution. Economics and changing demographics made up a good chunk of why people left Ireland. Someday, I'll write about my findings of why my various ancestors left Ireland. I only found one family who truly left because of famine.

Now those McGuire's....I am also a Maguire on my mom's side but they seem have less conflict and, for lack of a better word, drama there. The Maguire's from County Louth seem a bit more calm. I was told that they used to use the surname of McGuire way back in the 1600s in that area. At some point, they went with Maguire. Maguire could have been what they meant to use all along. I have found that when spelling counts the most, it gets utterly screwed up. This applies to last names and source document records for sure. I have also been known to say that the "spelling got lost in translation via immigration." Yes, its so true and I have several examples. When spelling really counts, people blow it.

Back to my McGuire's. I do keep getting off track. By the way, the McGuire name is synonymous with County Fermanagh. Enniskillen was known as the "Maguire/McGuire stronghold" from, oh, many of hundreds of years ago. I'm good with this information but it is rather generic.

Now, yes, I'm off track. I think that is the plan. That is the trick. My McGuire side of the family likes to distract with anecdotes and sarcasm. That might be from the old country but might be a direct result of living in NYC. New York City was one of the places the Irish came to in droves. Boston would be another but my relatives came to New York. From what I can find, the McGuire's struggled. They struggled from at least the 1840s until maybe around the time that my own grandfather got a job circa 1930. He later went on to get married and left the city for Long Island. My father lived in the original suburbia. How many generations did it take to get there? At least three.

So, I titled this "Can't Post Something - McGuire". I should stamp shhhh, shhh, shh, all over it though. Secrets swarm within this side of my family. My uncle has told me several times that there are so many secrets. I've asked about what they might be. He doesn't know. It drives me crazy. We may never know. Except, we may.

Another researcher sent me information that mentions my great great grandmother and one of her brothers. Shocking as it all may be, it mentions drinking, the law, children, and McGraths. The truth of the matter seems to be that the secrets are actually on my McGrath side but included the McGuire's. My great great grandmother was Sarah McGrath (her married name was McGuire). Mrs. McGuire is mentioned in documentation that is not so great. It sheds light on the subject of secrets in the family but also too much of too much.

I am banned from posting the information here despite how long ago it happened. It was in the latter 1800s, by the way. Even now, there are too many secrets on his side of the family. I may never know them all. I may never get to share what was shared with me.
I have lived in California the majority of my life except
for the four years we spent living in Ohio for my dad to get his MBA. I was born in California and raised
here. I’ve seen fires burning up in the
hills in the distance from my childhood home in Fairfield many times as a kid
and never thought much of it. It was
always the norm each Summer/Fall. Mother
nature would come through and do a “little clean up”. Before we knew it, the fires were out. It would be a distant memory after just a few
days.

If the fire was near Lake Berryessa, we’d all wonder if my
aunt’s and uncle’s place at “Bourbon Point” (Wragg Canyon/South Shore Resort,
now Pleasure Cove) would still be there the following season for water-skiing,
boating and family fun with cousins and relatives. It always survived unscathed. I personally spent many a day there from the
early 1970s to my last visit in 1998.
The Bureau of Reclamation reclaimed the land around the lake telling
people to pretty much "get out", except for day use. Now, there’s not much to burn in the way of
structures around that lake. There could
be a revival of resorts someday.

Now, my first involvement in seeing the results of a
destructive firestorm was when I started working for a large national insurance
company. They’d always say that
California had its challenges with fire for sure. This was absolutely evidenced as each year passed. Some years had few fires and other years had
destructive firestorms that would wipe out whole communities and also all of
that collected surplus insurance premium from years gone by. For that company, yes, the premium mattered
but so did their customers and, really, more so on the customer side. I will never forget the customer service
philosophy as a good corporate citizen and still carry the imprint of that with
me. It is people that matter and you
need to have insurance. That does happen
to involve money which is not everyone’s favorite topic.

With each firestorm, came hundreds of homes lost by
customers, real people who lost everything in most cases. I can recall reviewing photos for hundreds of
homes. It really hits home when you can
see the before (when the house was first purchased or re-reviewed, and lovingly
furnished with people’s belongings that show life is there) and the after. The aftermath of a fire is a gutting
feeling. You see debris on a slab or concrete
walled perimeter that’s about 2 feet high if you are lucky (that’s the
foundation by the way) and a fireplace chimney sticking up solo in the air with
no building for it to hug.

Most people don’t have basements in California but homes
built into a hillside slope are not uncommon.
Unique, one of a kind homes, crop up in there, too. A house called “The Wing” comes to mind. It no longer exists and was never
rebuilt. It burned down and the owners
walked away (with their lives) and never attempted to put it back. They couldn’t bring themselves to
rebuild. It was lost in a firestorm and
exists in memory. Don’t worry, they have
a home elsewhere now and were good with the decision to not rebuild in the
“middle of nowhere California on a hill with a view.”

Watching the fires these past weeks made me want to turn away
from social media and the television.
When I heard the fire had entered the urban area of Santa Rosa causing
total losses of homes to an entire neighborhood, I took notice. Everything I’ve ever learned about brush fire
hazard went out the door. A fire had
burned into an urban area that I would not consider the “Wildland Urban
Interface” or WUI. The WUI, to me, was
always those housing developments on hillside slopes with native vegetation (or
not so native Eucalyptus trees) and other flammable underbrush encroaching on
open space. I never dreamed of it
burning over a highway and into urban, flat, concrete, asphalt, and with urban landscaped
neighborhoods who have .15 acre, if lucky, as their property. It’s surreal.

But, my memory bank is full of information and I could
recall the “wind driven fire”, “embers in the wind”, and wind gusts that drove
a fire in a place like San Bernardino County years ago. It was a memory that I’d almost forgotten
about. This time in Santa Rosa, it all
seems worse, much worse. The Tubbs Fire
(Santa Rosa/Sonoma County) seems to have topped all fires in
ferociousness. The Atlas fire complex was not much better.

I could not turn away from watching the fires (on the news and online) as I found out
about people I knew impacted and some close calls. My mom was one of them. A close call in an urban grid of streets,
houses, asphalt, concrete, and flat as a pancake neighborhood in
Fairfield. That describes how her house
is situated pretty well. There’s
sidewalks, a fire hydrant on the corner and it comes with the paid fire
department’s station about a mile way.
It is urban suburbia in California that’s been there for over 30 years. The other side of Fairfield where I grew up
has been there much longer. A week and half ago, I
could hardly believe it. My mom’s home
was under advisory level to evacuate. In
other words, get packing a bag and be ready to leave. What?! It all seemed ridiculous to think

I’ve relaxed some and so has my mom.
While material items should not be the most important thing in your
life, a home is a bit different. Where
you lay your head at night matters. People
need consistency and comfort. Fire
completely takes people out of being comfortable and, in some cases, takes it
all away. It is stressful for sure.
As the years pass, I can’t help but wonder if it will just

At this point, I don’t have anything magnanimous or

first responders are real people who definitely deserve our gratitude. There have been many acts of kindness. I don’t want to be the naysayer in all of
this calling out that I told you so or this is going to happen again. By the way, it will happen again but I don’t
have a crystal ball to tell me where and when.

There were a few shocking revelations (and not so shocking) for me this go around as I was just watching it unfold online.
Global warming – yes. People

staying put in California for now.

It's not much time to do research but it is enough time to refamiliarize myself with people on my family tree, remind myself of where I left off on my research, reply to any emails and messages, and review new DNA matches (close matches, that is.....at least 4th cousin or less).

What does this do for me? It keeps me connected to my family history. Along the way, I get a chance to add, edit, and correct anything that is not quite right.

I hope to embark on a larger photo scanning project soon. I have hundreds of photos and about 80% of them are labeled. That is an amazing gift in and of itself. The labeling is key in the process of reviewing photos and matching pictures to the names on my family tree.

I can't wait to carve out a little more time to work on this. Maybe that will happen once my children head back to school in August. Until then, a quick 45 minute review most days, will suffice. zelserskhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11392051499155306765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1283298824425438148.post-45727111124933319262017-07-13T09:24:00.003-07:002017-07-13T09:24:59.994-07:00Herb Borchers, Sr. - Letter to Mr. Novak This letter is how my great grandfather, Herb Borchers, Sr. got his first job. I popped on over the website. Sure enough, you can upload your GEDCom file (mine was downloaded from the Ancestry DNA results) and receive My Heritage's ethnicity estimate based on your DNA.

Below is My Heritage's interpretation of my DNA ethnicity estimate. In some ways, it answers some questions. The main one is that I'm not English. If I was it would be indicated separately from the category of Irish/Scottish/Welsh. Ancestry's breakdown left me wondering. Irish is broken out on Ancestry's DNA ethnicity but British is lumped together seemingly including Scottish, Welsh and maybe even Northern Ireland to an extent. Since all of this is an estimate, you need to take it with a grain of salt.

The broader results of the DNA are much more telling and confirming of why we look like we do and where our family roots originate. Let's just put it this way, my husband's results are much more interesting. He has roots in places like Pakistan, Iberian Peninsula, and European Jewish, if even a smidgen of each. He is mostly European with a whole lot of British Isles but the others, while anecdotal at best now, sound exotically interesting.
It is interesting for sure. I Found a first cousin, once removed tonight. That is pretty cool. We connected briefly in messages over Ancestry.com. That might be it for a while though. I'm good with that.

Now is my time to get reconnected with my blog. I need to get back on track. My goal has always been to post information online rather than keep it hidden away in a drawer. My online blog is a great reference when I'm out and about. In fact, sometimes it has been a better reference than Ancestry.com. When I need to know more about specifics about a family line, I can look it up here. I hope that is the case in the future for my family members.

I have suspended my Flanagan posts for privacy reasons. I'm just not sure what to do going forward. I have had a lot of people pulling in information to their family tree on Ancestry simply because the surname matches. Flanagan is a somewhat common Irish surname. I am a bit perplexed as to why they would just borrow information from my family tree that makes no sense in their line. In other words, dates and locations don't match. Plus, the Michael Flanagan they love to make their great great grandfather never had a wife or children. In fact, he left Ireland and came back. So, he even had break in living there during which time, he did not have a wife and children living in Ireland.

As I blog, I work some things out. Additionally, I have photos galore right now. Photos of my German ancestors. I plan to post them here.

I can't wait to moving on this again. I will call my blog re-emergence of Mine, Yours, and the Other Guy's Genealogy.
This is my mom's German ancestry line. She is half German and many of her ancestor line ended up in Missouri, Minnesota, onto Dakyin, NE and North Dakota, and finally to Napa, CA. Many of our immigrant ancestors arrived in Baltimore, MD.

As for photos, I have many now. I love photos. They are so telling and truly worth a thousand words.

Fred Jackel, Henrietta Fett Jackel, and Augusta Jackel

Frederick Jackel (pronounced Yak-el) was my great great grandmothers adoptive father. Anna Maria Jackel (Borchers married name, biological surname was Kern) was adopted by Fred Jackel and his wife, Barbara Rausch, sometime in the 1860s. We do not know what happened to Anna's biological parents but she indicated her birth surname was Kern. All of her own children knew she was adopted. This is a good thing since her son William Borchers married Augusta Jackel.

In the second photo, you see Fred, Henrietta and Augusta Jackel. Fred married Henrietta Fett after his wife, Barbara, passed away and after Henrietta's first husband, Conrad Fett, passed away. They each had older children by this time in their lives. Their union produced a child together, Augusta Jackel. She is pictured with her parents. It is not known at this time what Henrietta Fett Jackel's maiden name actually was. I've tried to find that but it is not to be located in records that I have access too.

Photos are pretty amazing. Putting the name and their story to a face makes working on your family tree that much more interesting. These people were a huge part in the lives of my great grandfather and his parents plus Augusta moved to California and was the aunt of my grandma. They were not strangers but part of a community and one that moved west, at that!
I found it very interesting for about 5 minutes. At the time, there weren't many matches. Now, I am overwhelmed with 134 pages (about 50 people per page) of DNA matches with many distant 5th cousins or more. The results are a mixed bag for sure.

First and foremost my ethnicity estimate is interesting and yet rather mundane at the same time. I can't say that I did not know what to expect since we'd had my husband's completed the prior year. His was enlightening in that it eliminated the family lore that they were Native American in there somewhere. My husband is not. Nor is he related to Betsy Ross. Lots of made up family lore passed down on his line. But, there is still a potential that some proof could be out there to show different. Even his line could have surprises to the contrary but someone would need to pay for the research at this point and hunt down the truth to prove it!

My Ancestry.com ethnicity estimate is as follows:

58% Ireland
28% Great Britain
5% Scandinavia
4% Europe West
4% Europe East
1% Finland/East Russia
100% - European

Being only 58% ethnically Irish was a little surprising. I would have thought it would have been closer to 70%. DNA ethnicity is not an exact science nor do the genes pass down the line in exact proportions.

What I do glean from this breakdown is that 28% of my ethnicity is Great Britain. Does this confirm that my Maxwell's were from Scotland? It might. Does this confirm that my Irish ancestors living in the "Pale" married those from Britain? There again, it might.

The 28% Great Britain is a bit of a mystery to me. Does that include my McGuire's who were from County Fermanagh which is part of Northern Ireland and is considered Great Britain? Well, I would hope McGuire's of Ireland would not be considered in that British ethnicity but who can really tell here.

Overall, I consider the ethnicity estimate nice to know. In some cases, it is anecdotal at best but certainly tells you where not to look for your ancestors.

As for DNA matches, that is pretty distant. I have three people who are 2nd-3rd cousins, only one was a surprise. Once we figured it out, we pretty much have noted it and moved on. I have four people in the 3rd-4th cousin range. Again, no real surprises but there is one person who has not responded to me. I guess that's the way it goes.

I have had contact from one match who was adopted so is searching for his real parents. That's interesting. I come up as a 4th to 6th cousin. We seem to be distant relations. The person has figured out what line he is related too though. I wish him luck in discovering is biological parents.

Many people don't have their family tree connected to their DNA. Without that information, who knows how we might be related. Also, those people who choose to just put initials like "J.R." truly aren't looking for their ancestors if you ask me. That person has no tree attached to their DNA.

The Ancestry.com DNA section also has a Beta out there called DNA Circles. Again, this is kind of nice to know but in some cases in duplicates information even within the DNA Circles. It also does not really tell me anything that I didn't already know about my ancestors from the Irish Settlement in upstate New York.

Ancestry DNA is interesting. I do think people should participate in this database. Until the database has a good collection of people's DNA, it will continue to have "emerging" results. I'm waiting for more.

I was tired of spam comments to the posts while receiving only a few comments at a time where there was a real connection to my family tree. Now, after a year or so, I have re-posted all my blog posts, except Flanagan posts, with the original post dates.

The index is mostly updated too with the exception of some broken links and posts that were never indexed. I will be working to get broken hyperlinks fixed and complete the index in the near future. In the meantime, I hope that readers find some of my posts interesting and that relatives near and distant find what they might be looking for. Give me a shout out in comments if you enjoyed any posts or found a connection.

Cheers! zelserskhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11392051499155306765noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1283298824425438148.post-3919675633978171302017-03-20T23:09:00.000-07:002017-03-20T23:09:56.430-07:00Some Posts Back Up!
It would appear that a new group of people are getting into their family trees. This is great!

I must admit though that for me, I had taken a bit of a break from several of my lines because I'd hit the proverbial "brick wall". Also, time to work on my family tree is not something that I've got a lot of.

A year or so back, I reverted many of my over 670 blog posts back to drafts because of uninvited spam in the comments. As a result, those posts are suspended out there within my blog for what I thought would be for posterity for myself and my immediate family. To top it off, I'd had little traffic on my blog so it made sense to remove the posts that were attracting way to much spam to keep up with as the moderator and author of this blog.

At this point in time, I am slowly resurrecting posts when I can. I have requests to put my Irish Settlement, McLaughlin, and Maxwell posts back out there. Let me tell you, there are many of those.

Today, I am working on getting the section about the Irish Settlement in Newport, New York with hyperlinks back up and running. It's not exactly a quick process. I will have time to tackle the rest sometime this summer and will try sooner to do more.

What a blessing to have amassed so much information that even I am now overwhelmed by the bank of writings that I have to weed through (and more information on an external hard drive, too). Organizing it again will be a labor of love but will take some time.

P.S. I did do my DNA on Ancestry.com and it is interesting. I recommend it. My wish for those who do their DNA test is for them to also create and attach their family tree on Ancestry.com. Without a family tree attached, the DNA does not do much for you or any "cousin" matches you see. Please put your tree out there. Mine is there with medium level detail (zelsersk, My DNA Direct Line Match). Thank you!

Forgive
grammar and spelling errors!
It's about time!

The following are my mom's side of the family. They definitely took photos regularly and hung onto them. All of these families lived in Napa, California.

I will be retouching these photos for printing. So thankful to have them (and know who everyone is in them, too.)
They spend many hours in the classroom working toward state standards but they also create by working on art and projects. Recently, my 5th grader completed her 10 page report about the Monterey Bay and the aquarium. She wrote about 4 animals and wrote 2 pages about the aquarium. Part of the report required each student to illustrate by hand each of those 4 animals and label their basic parts. My 5th grader has a pretty good hand at art. Once the report comes home, I'll post her hand drawn illustrations.

In the meantime, the following photos were part of the field experience.
My children's activities and my many volunteer jobs keep my time full these days. I work on my genealogy about 2 hours per week.

I am slowly going through everything that I have in boxes again. I've restored my mom's photo album so that it can be used again. The cover was completely broken off and the photos were falling off the pages. Now, she has a new album that I found on Amazon. It was challenging because of the nonstandard size. The photos are back on the pages and the book is back in her possession. Someday, I will go through that album and scan each photo.

During the Fall, I scanned my dad's photo collection of his time in the Air Force during Vietnam. I created a photo journal on Shutterfly and printed books for myself and family. The books turned out great including some of the sillier photos. It is hard to believe that he passed away just over 11 years ago.

I challenged myself last week to finally get a photo out of a frame. The photo was stuck on the glass. Over the years as the photo slowly became dry and somewhat brittle, it has released. To get the remainder of the photo off of the glass, I used a hair dryer. With some damage, I fixed the photo with some acid free markers but not before I scanned it. I was also able to fix the scanned version in Photoshop. Jack and Minnie Flanagan are now free of their frame if they need to be. I was able to return the original in the frame back to my mom. She'd been missing that photo for quite some time even though she knew where it was.
I have more things to "fix", scan, and return to my mom. In the meantime, here's what I've been up to with my family and children. Also, this is why I live in California. Sonoma in January was absolutely beautiful and you can't beat the weather in Anaheim in March. Yosemite in April was amazing. All of the Yosemite photos were taken by my 10 year old with a little point and shoot camera while she was out with her hiking group. May has been hit or miss weather with some rain but we still stayed dry at the Zoo Safari overnight at the Sacramento Zoo with my 7 year old. The best was Yosemite. It just takes your breath away when you see it in person.
It is the "mound of the Winter Solstice".

Newgrange is located at what is now called The Brú na Bóinne, World Heritage Centre in Ireland. It is at least 200 B.C. and there are indications in the area that is much older. So, a little ancient Irish history is called for today, a day of the Winter Solstice.
